Knowl is an internal knowledge-sharing platform where employees write and share articles that can be found by group, tag and full-text search. With around 50,000 articles and over 1,200 groups, it is the circulatory system for organisational knowledge.
A writing experience that flows, classification and search that finds things, and rankings and notifications that keep people engaged — a platform meeting every axis knowledge sharing needs, built in-house from scratch in 6 months. This is the story of that launch.
They are building a culture of internal knowledge sharing where the know-how and examples each employee holds are written up as articles and reused across departments and themes. What is written is organised by group and tag, and reaches the people who need it through full-text search and rankings.
Turning knowledge buried in email and chat into a searchable asset is the core of the business: stopping know-how from living in individuals and making expert knowledge reusable company-wide. Posts get read, reactions come back, and people want to write again — a community platform where learning circulates.
None of these were questions of technology choice; they were business problems tied directly to gathering knowledge, reusing it and keeping people posting. Building from scratch demanded a design that satisfies all of them at once.
When knowledge is buried in email and chat, The same question, the same research gets repeated again and again. You need one way in.
Without designing classification and search, what accumulates stays buried and unfound. Merely piling it up does not make an asset.
When expert know-how stays locked in one person, is lost when people leave. You need a mechanism that turns it into organisational knowledge.
If no reaction comes back, the writers disappear. You need a cycle designed so posts are read, praised and written again.
The writing experience, classification and search, groups and permissions, and the mechanics of engagement — the four areas essential to knowledge sharing that lasts, all built in-house from scratch. Together with the client we delivered a design that is easy to write in, easy to search, and easy for the operator to keep alive.

If writing feels hard, the articles never arrive in the first place.
