Seafarer labor, health, and logbooks —Built in-house from scratchinto an app onboard.

DeckMate is a platform that supports seafarer labor management in the maritime industry. Used across 48 vessels and over 3,000 seafarers nationwide, it connects the onboard mobile app with the HQ admin console.

This is the story of launching a new platform — built in-house from scratch in 14 months — to digitize work/rest-hour management, fatigue/stress checks, and the seafarer's book.

About the client

DeckMate Co., Ltd., supporting the maritime industry.

DeckMate Co., Ltd. is a shipping operator running multiple vessels. Until now, it managed seafarer labor, health, and statutory records with paper and Excel.

At sea, where connectivity is limited, accurately tracking each seafarer's work/rest hours and health while staying compliant was a prerequisite for keeping the business running.

CHALLENGE
Design challenges to solve

Overcoming paper-and-Excel operations through four design challenges.

This was more than process efficiency — it was a management challenge tied directly to compliance, seafarer safety, and how fast HQ could make decisions.

If work and rest hours can be tracked accurately
The Maritime Labour Convention's rest-hour rules are complex.Paper tallying makes instant compliance visibility hard was the case.
If health checks can be carried out reliably
Fatigue and stress checks werePaper operations cause missed checks and tallying effort was high, so deciding whether a consultation was needed also tended to be delayed.
If the seafarer's book can go paperless
Because the seafarer's book and logbook are on paperLoss risk and update effort existed, and searching past records was inefficient too.
If it could be shared from ship to HQ instantly
Connectivity at sea is limited, sharing status with HQ is delayed meant decisions were always playing catch-up.

ARCHITECTURE
The architecture we built together

Built in-house from scratch — four domains unified on one platform.

Together with DeckMate Co., Ltd., we built a seafarer mobile app and an HQ admin console on a shared cloud platform. Data entered onboard syncs to headquarters whenever a connection is available, enabling near-real-time visibility into compliance status.
